During this two-month long summer internship, I was the sole UX designer and project manager tasked with redesigning the existing 100%PURE website. I worked closely with the CEO and founder of Purity Cosmetics as my main stakeholder, as well as contract developers who had the technical skills to make the vision happen. Throughout the process, I approached the redesign with a mobile-first mentality.
The old website needed to be migrated to Shopify 2.0 and with it, the founders wanted a website revamp that has been in the works for years but had never been accomplished.
My goal: Redesign the existing website to be up-to-date with other cosmetics websites while staying in line with 100%PURE's branding guidelines and increasing accessibility for new and existing users.
I started with a landscape review of other cosmetics companies. I had an idea from my discussions with Rick, Purity Cosmetics' founder, of what features he would like to see added and noted how they were incorporated on other websites. I conducted a deep audit of improvements I saw could be made on the existing site, including restructuring the information architecture of the navigation menu. I focused closely on the Home and Product Pages, as those would be the ones with the highest traffic.
Based on stakeholder feedback and the knowledge I gathered from my landscape review, I put together rough prototypes of possible layouts for the redesigned pages. I showed these drafts to both the stakeholders within the company and the contractors to see if my ideas would be technically feasible. I also conducted a couple of usability tests with friends to see if the user flow made sense before starting hi-fi prototyping.
I was given access to the company's brand guide, which I used to create a living design system on Figma. I chose new fonts for the site for the design system and used these new typefaces in addition to the existing brand colors to create high-fidelity prototypes of the site on Figma. I handed these designs off to the contract development team, holding bi-weekly stand-ups to oversee their progress, conduct quality assurance, and address any issues that arose.
After multiple rounds of feedback, testing, and tweaking, the final product is now live on the 100%PURE website!
This was my first time leading a project on my own. I did 100% of the designing for the new website and managed a small group of developers, IT techs, and marketing specialists. It was super interesting seeing how a real business works, and designing for consumer-facing products. I learned a lot thanks to the mentorship of Rick, Mac, and Kelly, who worked closely with me throughout the process and acted as my mentors despite their limited experience in web design. I feel much more experienced in Figma now, especially since I was rusty at the Design Library and Auto-Layout functions before. I look forward to taking on more web design projects in the future!
